Abstract

The social responsibilities of the youth include understanding and participating in the social process of helping people of the communities to eradicate social injustices that reflect the youth’s direction and coordination towards civic engagement.  As such, the conviction of social responsibilities of the youth holds opinion of their involvement in civic actions that bring encouraging change in the existing systems for the welfare of the society. The study used quantitative survey involving systematic sampling method to interview 180 students of the faculty of social sciences in a public university of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Interviewing schedule was used to solicit responses and informed consent was taken before conducting the interviews with the participants. The findings suggest that majority of the students had never participated in any voluntary community services or even signature campaigns on social issues. In participants views the role of youth in the society should be to advocate peace and positive change. The participants advocated for peace and inter-faith education, capacity building opportunities and promotion of linkages with corporate and development sector, and folk culture, music and theatre by public universities of the country. The recommendations include promoting social responsibilities and civic engagement opportunities for students by public sector universities of the country so that the youth can contribute effectively towards the benefits of the broader community.
